Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hostel?

A hostel is basically a hotel with more shared space and a fun and vibrant atmosphere. There is also a kitchen so you can cook meals for yourselves if you choose. Shared space is the fiber for shared stories, shared experiences and new friends.

Wifi?

Of course! – Please note, we are a TV free hostel. We encourage you to enjoy our social environment and explore the outdoor opportunities Salida has to offer!

How far is downtown?

Downtown Salida is about 2/3 mile walk or 10-15 minute walk. We are on the main street that leads downtown. If you need to go farther for errands, bike rentals are available from two bike shops in town and we have a local taxi service.

Are you 420 friendly?

We have no smoking indoors. We have a sitting area and picnic bench outside for smoking tobacco and marijuana. We ask that you don’t smoke in our main outdoor seating area for the comfort of other guests.

Do you accept walk-ins?

All our bookings come through our website. If you would like to make a same day reservation, you are welcome to book online if there is availability. Our website is always up-to-date. Our staff can also help you here at the Salida Hostel if you come by or call the hostel between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. For walk-ins, we do require ID (non-local) and a credit card for bookings. We serve tourists/travelers, and do not accept locals.

Group Bookings?

We love group bookings! You can rent a group of rooms and/or beds, or the whole hostel. We do fill up fast so it’s recommended you book several months in advance if you have a large group. We can often offer a discount in our slower winter season. Please email us for further info.

Weddings?

While we don’t have the facilities to host weddings, we do accept group bookings for weddings, as well as room blocks. Please email for further info.

Are the upstairs rooms quiet?

The four rooms upstairs are separate from the public spaces downstairs and outdoors and are quiet and private. The Red Mountain Room faces the street and has some street noise. We also have quiet hours after 10:00 PM.

Do you offer weekly, monthly discounts?

No. We are a hostel for tourists and visitors to Salida, and have a 7 day maximum stay policy. If a day or two more is needed for a reservation, please contact us.

Can you access the trails from the Salida Hostel?

There is a trail behind the hostel that leads downtown along the river, connecting to the Salida Trail System, or on to the two lakes nearby, Sand Lake is about 1/4 mile away, and Franz Lake another mile upriver. And the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route goes right by the front door!

Do you have river access?

Yes! There is easy access for fly fishermen and kayaks, but we do not have a boat ramp. Salida Hostel is the original house on a large parcel on the Arkansas River. There are houses between the hostel and the river, but there is direct access to the river from the hostel. There is a large eddy right there, and it is a great place to tube, kayak, fish, picnic or just hang out.

Pets?

Although we love our furry little friends, we sadly do not allow any pets to spend the night at the Salida Hostel.  It is simply too difficult to keep the rooms to our standard of cleanliness while allowing pets to stay. However, there are excellent dog boarders in the area, including Wag-n-Tails — 719.539.9246 and Alpha Dog — 719.539.5481.

When is your Bunkroom available?

Our Bunk-room is a 10 person co-ed dorm which is bookable by bed Memorial Day to Labor Day (summer only). During the winter it becomes our Family Suite which sleeps 6 and is bookable by private groups only.

What are check-in and check-out times?

Check out is at 11:00 AM and check in is at 4:00 PM.

Are children welcome?

You are more than welcome to bring your kids to our hostel. The Family Suite in particular is designed to sleep up to 4 kids.

If your children are sleeping in the bed with you, or in a portable crib or bedding that you bring, there is no charge. If you would like a cot or twin mattress for them, or you bring more than two kids with you, there is a charge of $17 to cover our additional housekeeping costs.

Do you have laundry service?

We have one machine and guests are welcome to use it after our housekeeping is done. Payment is $5 a load. Soap is included in that price.

Do you rent out bicycles to get around town?

We do not, however mountain bike and cruiser rentals are available at all our great bike shops.

Do you have an area where I can work on my bike?

Yes, we have an area downstairs or out back.

Do you accept Hiker Re-supply packages?

Yes we do! Even if you aren’t staying with us we will hold your box for you. Please put CT or CDT hiker and your estimated date of arrival somewhere on the box. USPS is generally most reliable in Salida, but we accept UPS and FedEx as well. The box should be addressed as follows:
